TU Delft conducts research on irrigation systems, polders, urban areas and complete river basins. Their aim is to support water management practices by increasing understanding of water management processes, providing know-how and expertise, and offering an independent view. To this end, they collaborate closely with water managers and stakeholders.

TU Delft applies a broad, interdisciplinary approach to water management issues. The tools that they use in their research ranges from data assimilation and remote sensing, to real-time-control and legal and stakeholder analysis. The issues studied include floods and droughts, climate change, water pollution, performance, international conflicts and IWRM.

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway’s leading institute for basic and applied research on marine and freshwaters. The institute’s research comprises a wide array of environmental, climatic and resource-related fields. NIVA’s world-class expertise is multidisciplinary with a broad scientific scope. We combine research, monitoring, evaluation, problem-solving and advisory services at international, national and local levels.

The long term development goal of the project “IWRM - Institutional Building and Training” which is collaboration between NIVA and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC) is to contribute significantly to the implementation of well-functioning Integrated Water Resources Management at the national level in Myanmar. The Irrigation, Water Utilization and Management Department (IWUMD) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation and the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems (DWIR) under the Ministry of Transport are members of the steering group of the project together with MONREC.

Myanmar Industrial Port (MIP) Container Terminal and Inland Container Depot of Myanmar Annawa Swan-er-shin Group (S) Co Ltd (MAS) was formally opened on 4th January 2003.

This national, privately-owned port was founded with the guidance and assistance of the Head of State. The ministry had permitted private entrepreneurs to undertake port services in cooperation with local and foreign investors, as long as the services are in accord with the Myanmar Investment Law. MIP was built with MAS as the sole investor, with MAS funding and overseeing the port construction and operations 100%.

MIP's main business is the handling of containers and other port services on an international level. It has been incredibly successful at what it does; expanding tremendously in just over a decade. It has also diversified and expanded its portfolio with many new ventures and assets.

The National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) and Advisory Group (AG) are working on the long-term plan of producing the competent young water professional through Hydro-Informatics Centre (HIC) supported by the AG. The Young Water Professional (YWP) program is a eleven month long program, in which young graduates of Myanmar who have ambition to become water professionals and government staff from various water related Ministries receive well defined technical and on job training through the Ayeyarwady Integrated River Basin Management (AIRBM) Project. They receive mentoring, coaching and training in various technical, social, economic, political and decision making aspects of water projects. YWP trainees are recruited across Myanmar and their trainings include lectures, seminars and field trips locally and abroad. Trainers include internationally well-known water professionals from all over the world and from Myanmar.

WWF is the world’s leading independent conservation organization. WWF has many offices around the world and WWF Myanmar is one of the extensions of WWF-Greater Mekong. The hope of WWF Myanmar is that decision makers across the country will use the assessments to promote a green economy approach—one in in which the sustainable use of natural capital is integrated into the country’s new plans and policies for the economy, energy, agriculture, land use, foreign investment and more. A project led by the Myanmar government with support from WWF is already underway to compare how natural capital values change under different development scenarios.

Due to the need for more smart data measurements and analyses to be able to adequately choose the most sustainable solutions for water and resource management, Ministry of Transport and Communication (MOTC), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MOALI) and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC) are working together with TU Delft and the partners of VPdelta to jointly develop smart ways to collect these data. The project called “Leapfrogging Delta Management in Myanmar” was initiated by TU Delft, FutureWater and HKV Consultants, and funded under the Partners for Water program by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

In response to the request of the NWRC in Myanmar and the interest of Dutch innovative enterprises, the project’s main aim is to extend the current work in the Bago-Sittaung to the whole Ayeyarwady Delta in accordance with the agreement between the Myanmar and Dutch governments. The aim is to test and demonstrate innovative smart information solutions in the Delta and disseminate the results widely. Coalitions are created around specific information products (e.g. rainfall, erosion, subsidence). In each coalition, partners work on innovative monitoring: to combine remote sensing, ground data collection with modelling techniques.

The results of the project will be presented in an online platform to disseminate the products and services to a local and international audience. Throughout the entire project Dutch and Myanmar experts and young professionals will work together (learning-by-doing) and dissemination and training will be organized.

The collaborators of the project are: Myanmar National Water Resources Committee (NWRC), MOTC, DWIR, MOALI, MONREC, Irrigation Technology Center (Bago), Yangon Technological University, Myanmar Maritime University, VPdelta, TU Delft, Disdrometrics, FutureWater, Akvo, SHORE Monitoring & Research, Mobile Water Management, HKV Lijn in Water, SkyGeo, Wavedroid, VanderSat.

Life in Myanmar is changing dramatically. After decades of military rule, the country is gradually opening up to the world and becoming a democracy.

We opened our Yangon office in 2016 to unlock people's potential with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can break free from poverty and change their lives for good.

Across the country, two in three people have clean water and decent toilets. But in many rural communities, where most people live, these figures are among the worst in Asia.

A lack of sustainable public infrastructure and resources has hampered efforts to reach people with these essentials. We will help the Government invest in these areas and ensure strong plans and systems are in place from the start.
