The Thaketa Climate Adaptation for Water Security Project is a 2-year pilot project (January 2020-December 2021) aiming to design, implement and evaluate a variety of climate adaptation interventions in Thaketa, one of the most flood-prone and water-scarce townships of Yangon.

In the pilot project, we are establishing an innovative network-driven stakeholder participation process for designing and implementing different types of climate adaptation interventions, based on the social innovation approach from one of the most successful, innovative climate adaptation programs in the Netherlands: Amsterdam Rainproof.

The pilot project is undertaken at the request of the Yangon Region Government and Yangon City Development Committee and jointly funded by the consortium partners, the Yangon Region Government and the Dutch Government (Partners poor Water program).

The consortium partners working together in the Thaketa project are: The Water Agency (lead), Doh Eain, Infram, Witteveen+Bos, Resilience, World Waternet, U.Minds and Water Bridge Myanmar.

22 & 24 July 2020 - A senior civil engineer from Beca taught how to do the levelling measurement to verify the Slope of the drains existing in ward _5, Thaketa and to corelate the results with LIDAR data. We started actual survey measurements in this week by dividing 3 zones for three days. In our surveying, we specially focus on measuring the bed level and curvet level of the drains as well as the reference road level. This survey measurement is aimed to help in the modelling of the drains as the phase 2 of Thaketa Climate Resilience Project.

The team consists of So Pyay, a community engagement intern from Doh Eain, Eaindra Htun, a volunteer who is doing her bachelor thesis on Thaketa and was an intern with Water Bridge, two Thaketa Drainage Members andv Thandar, project assistant of The Water agency who facilitates the team on site.

  • While Yangon is slowly "re-opening", we anticipate that online engagement will be a critical part of our community engagement approach going forward. For this, we have set-up a private community group on Facebook, called YaySat. Literally meaning "droplets", but also a metaphor for meeting each other. What's in a name!  https://www.facebook.com/...

In Thaketa, storm water is drained from houses, streets, squares and parks through an extensive network of drainage canals. Besides storm water, also domestic waste water flows through these drains. Using nothing more than gravity, the drains empty directly in the creeks and rivers around the city. In practice the flow of the water is severely hampered by sedimentation, vegetation, collapsed walls, blockages from roads and buildings and - more than anything else - lots of solid waste. As a results, the drains do not work properly and overflow during heavy rain, causing flooding, while in the dry season stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Our drainage expert team is mapping the network to identify the bottlenecks and see how the government and community can get the drains draining again!

An important initial step is to assess the quality of the various water sources that are currently used, both for drinking and domestic purposes, such as water from the retention lake, water pumped up through tube wells (from various depths) and bottled water from a range of vendors.
