About VU Amsterdam

The goal is to transform the University of Yangon as the one of the excellent academic institution, where people can learn world class education. The goal will bring beneficial for the future generation and national interest of the state. It is a long and delicate process. During the process, financial, technical and human resources will be essential to realize the goal.

The resources can be realized through voluntary contribution, international cooperation and donation. The most important source is its greatest asset- alumni .It is believed that old graduates of the University of Yangon are willing to see the golden image of their university again and want to be proud of its bright future. It is true that they are the most powerful resource of necessary contribution for renovating and upgrading University of Yangon.

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway’s leading institute for basic and applied research on marine and freshwaters. The institute’s research comprises a wide array of environmental, climatic and resource-related fields. NIVA’s world-class expertise is multidisciplinary with a broad scientific scope. We combine research, monitoring, evaluation, problem-solving and advisory services at international, national and local levels.

The long term development goal of the project “IWRM - Institutional Building and Training” which is collaboration between NIVA and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC) is to contribute significantly to the implementation of well-functioning Integrated Water Resources Management at the national level in Myanmar. The Irrigation, Water Utilization and Management Department (IWUMD) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation and the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems (DWIR) under the Ministry of Transport are members of the steering group of the project together with MONREC.

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and is based in Delft, the Netherlands. The Institute confers fully accredited MSc degrees, and PhD degrees in collaboration with partner universities. The Institute offers a unique combination of applied, scientific and participatory research in water engineering combined with natural sciences, social sciences and management and governance. IHE Delft carries out educational, research and capacity development activities that complement and reinforce each other in the broad fields of water engineering, water management, environment, sanitation, and governance.

In Myanmar, IHE Delft has been actively involved in capacity building, collaborating with academia and government. On 2017, it organized the Alumni Refresher Course on ‘Urban and Rural Polder Development in Coastal Areas: Impact of Climate Change and Land Subsidence on Food Security and Environmental Integrity’ in partnership with Myanmar Maritime University (MMU) and the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (IWUMD) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

The International WaterCentre (IWC) provides education and training, applied research and knowledge services to implement a whole-of-water cycle approach and develop capacity in integrated water resource management.

Integrated water management approach for:

• Sustainable urban communities
• Healthy river basins
• Water, sanitation and hygiene

Deltares is an independent, institute for applied research in the field of water, subsurface and infrastructure. Throughout the world, we work on smart solutions, innovations and applications for people, environment and society. Our main focus is on deltas, coastal regions and river basins. Managing these densely populated and vulnerable areas is complex, which is why we work closely with governments, businesses, other research institutes and universities at home and abroad.

The Yezin Agricultural University (YAU) is the only university level of higher education in Agriculture in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Primary function of YAU are teaching and training, conducting research and providing extension service to public. Specific objectives of the university are to produce highly qualified professionals needed for the development of the agriculture sector of the country who are well equipped in leadership, management, planning and analysis and interpretation skills and to provide adequate technical training on modern methods of agriculture for the farming communities including non-degree training programs.

Technological University (Pathein) is situated at the Apin-ne-se village which is in Pathein District, the Ayeyawady Division, Myanmar. It was opened on 27 December 1999. The university is run by Ministry of Education (Myanmar). Vision: To become internationally recognized, high-ranking University that educates  highly qualified Engineers and Architects  in building the nation towards the developed Myanmar.

West Yangon Technological University was established in 15th Dec. 2005. It is situated in HlaingTharYar and was the second campus of Yangon Technological University in 1996. West Yangon Technological University is situated 10 km away from downtown of Yangon. West Yangon Technological University's reputation for outstanding academic achievement is known nation-wide and reflects the intellectual achievement of its students.

Technological University (Hmawbi) is located on the east of the Yangon- Pyay Highways Road, near in Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region. On 20 January 2007, it was successfully upgraded as a Technological University (Hmawbi) also called TU (Hmawbi).

Technological University, Thanlyin is a technological university, located in Thanlyin, Yangon Division, Myanmar. It is part of a number of formerly two-year schools that have been promoted to university level in recent years. The military government, which repeatedly closed down schools and universities in the 1990s, has pursued a policy of dispersing students away from major city centers. In addition, it has the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system and wants to adopt the AUN-QA guidelines and criteria as part of its quality framework.

The University of Forestry is in Yezin near near Nay Pyi Taw, the only university specialized in forestry in Myanmar. It is administered by the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry and is united with the Forest Research Institute (FRI), a government R&D agency. 

Mandalay Technological University (MTU), formerly, the Mandalay Institute of Technology (MIT)), in Patheingyi, Mandalay, is a senior engineering university in Myanmar. It maintains an annual student intake of around 300.

On 18 January 2017 (Wednesday), the handover ceremony for laboratory equipments was held at Mandalay Technological University (MTU) in Mandalay. The provision of the equipment was a part of "the Project for Enhancing Technological Universities in Myanmar", whose Exchange of Notes (E/N) was signed in July 2014 and the Grant Agreement (G/A) was signed in August 2014 between the Ministry of Education in Myanmar and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). . Equipment handed over to MTU includes over 200 different kinds of laboratory equipment and tools, that will enable the MTU students to apply practical experiments to their education and research activities.

Irrigation Technology Center is committed to continuous human resources development of the irrigation department. It is located in Bego Division and is supported by JICA. Construction of ITC financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was commenced on February 2, 1987 and the Complex was then handed over to ID on March 31 , 1988. According To South to South Cooperation Program, "Training On Participatory Irrigation Management" was held at Irrigation Technology Centre (Bago) from January 14 to 19 ,2013. The Japanese Institute of Irrigation and Drainage(JIID) of Japan and the Irrigation Department of Myanmar jointly contributed the financial support.

MMU is one of the most selective universities in Myanmar as many of its students find job opportunities abroad. It is located in Thanlyin in the outskirts of Yangon and is the premier university of maritime education in Myanmar. It offers 6-year bachelor's degree programs and two-year post-graduate diplomas in various marine and naval disciplines. In 2007, the school had about 1,800 graduate students, pursuing international STCW-95-standards compliant maritime education. The minimum entrance mark is 491 out of 600 in 2010.

YTU is the country's oldest and largest engineering university, and the best engineering university in Myanmar. It is located in Gyogone, Yangon, is the premier engineering university of Myanmar and established as Department of Engineering under Rangoon University in 1924. By its former name Rangoon Institute of Technology (RIT), the university offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree programs in engineering disciplines to nearly 8000 students. Most YTU students are enrolled full-time in engineering programs although over 2000 students are also enrolled in part-time programs. YTU is also a member of ASEAN University Network, Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net), and Greater Mekong Sub-Region Academic and Research Network (GMSARN).
