For more than a decade the Salween University Network (SUN) has been researching water governance and management issues on the salween river during a time when few others were paying attention to this mighty river. Last week University of Melbourne, Chulalongkorn University, University of Yangon, & York University with the support from WLE Mekong held SUNs first-ever workshop within Myanmar bringing researchers from Myanmar, Thailand & China together. The 50+ papers presented amounts to a significant body of research in a basin which is still torn by conflict, hard to access and saddled with mistrust between actors.
At a side-meeting with national and state/regional government, the team discussed principles for salween water governance. For me, it was very exciting to hear strong interest from all parties on a "freedom to flow" principle which would keep one of Asia's last wild rivers free-flowing; securing the the ecological, cultural, social and livelihood values of this diverse and unique river system.
