Wastewater

Water problems could be categorized as too much water, too little water or too dirty in our perpetual daily routes. This time, my motive to continue the water journey in Yangon urges me to write about so-called "too dirty" theme in Yangon. I interviewed with U Sein Thaung Oo, vice-president of Myanmar Food Processors and Exporters Association (MFPEA) and he supports me to write about the waste water treatment and management plan in Yangon as well as in the central region.

Past and Present Situation in Yangon

Myanmar more fresh water per capita than all surrounding countries. Myanmar people tend to use water and fuels more recklessly as there is abundance. Even when it comes to industrial and manufacturing purpose, the factory owners don't think to generate their products in such a way that production results in less water usage in the process.

If the factory starts to produce more products, most facilities start using huge generators to operate the boilers, without much strategic thinking to whether it is necessary or not. In these days, they recognized the sustainable way of thinking to improve their business and industry.

During these days, more people are starting to recognize the value of water to use it in a smart way. Yet still, some of the organizations and private industries are obliged to follow the regulation. Still some are not because they reflect that in the business matter the environmental regulations are unnecessary to follow and it drags down the business interest. So that might require to compromise on this issue within business.

In the year 2012, the environmental conservative law was enacted which includes environmental quality standards, environmental conservation, prohibitions, offences and penalties to be disciplined under the constitution. Subsequently, the environmental conservative rules were executed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC) in 2014.

Why wastewater treatment is necessary

We are able to disallow wastewater to be disposed of in a manner dangerous to human health and lesser life forms or damaging to the natural environment. Wastewater treatment facilities reduce suspended solids and inorganic disposal to preserve the environment – water, land and air sequentially.

As the population increased and urbanization developed in one place, it creates the situation which leads to an increase in the volume of domestic and industrial wastewater.

So why wastewater should be well treated –

  • Save the industry - A well maintained and operated Industrial Wastewater Treatment system will help to save money in the long term.
  • Save water and energy – Thinking about using scrupulous water supply and energy generator save massive water and energy costs gradually.
  • Beneficial to the global business market – the background image of the products become modernized amongst business market sector internationally if the industry is obliged to follow the regulation.

How to follow

A business should perform to increase not only its capacity or modify its wastewater processing equipment used for wastewater treatment but also alteration to an existing rules and regulation.

Depending on the type of industry and the nature of its wastes, industries must apply methods such as those used for advanced treatment of sewage to purify wastewater containing pollutants such as heavy metals and toxic chemicals before it can be discharged.

For those industrial business needs to unite in order to allocate the issues and move forward their business plan when it comes to environmental conservation.
