31 Aug 18 - Eleven Myanmar - Transport authorities had allowed Yangon-Bagan train schedules to restart after flooding occurred on August 29, which prevented the trains from operating. The trains will begin running again starting from August 30. But the trains running on Yangon-Mandalay railroad have yet to resume their services.

A spillway collapsed at Hswar Dam which prevented the trains from running regular schedules as water and sand covered the rail tracks between Konegyi and Hswar train stations.

"Trains in Yangon-Mandalay railroad are still not running. We cannot tell when it will be resumed. We have to inspect the rail tracks after water is receded. We will need to repair them," said Traffic Manager Zaw Lwin from the Myanma Railways (MR).

About 400 passengers were trapped between Yedashe and Hswar train stations. They were rescued and transferred to safer areas through land routes. Sand covered the rail tracks running between Yangon and Bagan on August 29 but now the authorities had declared it okay to resume operations.

The MR returned the ticket fares to the passengers whose trips are canceled. The railway authorities are preparing to re-open the Yangon-Mandalay railroad and they will notifying it to the public when they do so.

Water covered Yangon-Bago railroad last month and some trains were forced to stop their operations for a few days.
