Record rainfall causes shutdown of some shops in Myitkyina

11 August 18 - Some shops have been closed by flood in Myitkyina Township, Kachin State due to record-breaking rainfall yesterday morning. 

As it has been raining heavily in Myitkyina Township since early morning of July 10th, flooding caused in low lying wards of town in Myitkyina. 

"Rain heavily started 4am. In the morning, wards were inundated. In the past, flood caused in our Kaymarthiri Ward but water level decreased. Now, rain stopped a long time. However, water level still swelled. Some shops along the road were closed so also vehicles including motorbikes can't drive. Some vehicles from workshop were transferred into the monastery," said Hla Win from Kaymarthiri Ward. 

"Rain heavily poured down within a short period. The rainfall is 3.93 inches during over two hours. In Myitkyina Township, it is a record rainfall this year. If there will be heavy rain suddenly, it causes torrent mountain rain and flooding in low lying wards," said Tin Htike from Director of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kachin State. 

Due to torrential rain occurred in Bhamaw, Mansi and Moemauk Townships, Kachin State on July 27th, two bridges and nearly 5,000 acres of farmlands were damaged.
