Shelter camps prepared in Sidoktaya city in Magwe
15 June 18 - Local authorities in Sidoktaya township in Magwe Region will prepared temporary shelters or set up camps if flooding due to heavy rain hits the town though it has not yet happened.
The water levels of Mone dam near Sidoktaya city and Kyi Ohn Kyi Wa dam, about 20 miles south of Mone dam, are rising due to continuous heavy rains.
Likewise, water level of Si Mee stream, which flows near Sidoktaya city, is rising and that is why, four sheltered camps were defined on Wednesday in a joint effort by a township administration team and civil society groups.
U Win Myint Htwe of Sidoktaya city told The Myanmar Times that the flooding had not yet hit the city Thursday, but it would eventually be affected if heavy rain continues.
We have prepared sheltered camps in case of floods. All of us faced difficulties in the 2015 flooding due to a lack of preparation," U Win Myint Htwe of Sidoktaya city, who helped to prepare the camps, said.
In 2015, floods hit Sidoktaya township of Magwe.
Shelter camps for about 4000 people were opened at basic high schools, primary schools, the fire department and the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, which are in the hilly region of Sidoktaya.
Due to the continuous heavy rain, the water level is rising at Mone dam, in the upper part of the township.
It has ranged from 505 feet on Tuesday to 525ft on Wednesday, according to the records of U Ko Ko Htwe at Mone Chaung Hydropower Station.
The stream burst its banks and flooded villages and bridges in Magwe.
About 5000 residents have been relocated to safe places and transportation has been cut off as the roads are covered with water.
Last week, a dam collapsed in Pakokku township triggering floods in several villages.
