Korea-Myanmar friendship bridge (Dala) project launched

The Korea-Myanmar friendship bridge (Dala) project, linking downtown Yangon to the under-developed Dala Township, will begin construction in April 2018.
The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place in the first week of March, while the project will be completed in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The government has also paid the rental fees and compensation for the lands acquired for the bridge construction project from the 2015-2016 to 2016-2017 fiscal years.
The friendship bridge will be a cable-stayed bridge. It will be 1,936 feet long, extending from Phone Gyi Street in Lanmadaw Township on the Yangon side to Bo Min Yaung Street on the other side of the Yangon river. The bridge will be 87 feet wide and 320 feet high to allow large passenger ships to pass underneath. It will also feature two 500-millimetre water pump lines.
Major construction work will also take place on two other sections: a 2,026-foot-long bridge at one end on the Yangon side and a 25,182-foot-long bridge at the other end on the Dala side.
The Korea-Myanmar Friendship Bridge is estimated to cost $168.173 million. The Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund will provide an Economic Development Cooperation Fund loan of $137.833 million, while the Union government will fund the remaining $30.341 million.
Upon completion of the bridge, it will contribute to the socio-economic development of the local people living in the Dala, Twantay, Kawhmu, Kungyangon and Ayeyawady regions.
