Yangon Declaration: The Pathway Forward

The 3rd Asia-Pacific Water Summit (APWS) was convened in Yangon on 11-12 December 2017, with the aim of promoting cooperation and partnership, as well as sharing knowledge and experiences to enhance water security in the region towards concrete actions and solutions for sustainable development.

All invited participants were very honoured that H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar delivered an opening speech.

Probably all participants need some time to digest the valuable information that was shared during keynote addresses and parallel Thematic Sessions (Program Booklet). The leaders of the Asia Pacific region concluded the 3rd Asia Pacific Water Summit with a concrete 'Yangon Declaration'. This roadmap marks the beginning of a regional endeavour to take a leading role in the implementation of the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development", 2018-2028.

The leaders of Asia Pacific region are determined to focus on the following four streams:

1.Sound Water Cycle Management

2.Governance and inclusive Development

3.Financing the implementation of water-related Sustainable Development Goals

4.Water cooperation at all levels

The Yangon Declaration ceremony was hosted by H.E. U Thant Sin Maung (Union Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar), Ravi Narayanan (Asia Pacific Water Forum Governing Council Chair) and Prof. Dr. Khin Ni Ni Thein (Secretary of Advisory Group (AG) of National Water Resources Committee Myanmar).
