Engaging Webinar on Flood Management from Various Perspectives

With the collaboration of Myanmar Water Partnership (MMWP), Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Development (IWUMD), Global Water Partnership and The Water Agency, the virtual webinar was successfully organized to promote and strengthen the knowledge and safety awareness of flood management from various perspectives to all the attended participants. The webinar was held on the 3rd of January and around 80 participants are enthusiastically involved in engaging with one another by asking questions and exchanging ideas on various topics related to flood management with the speakers.

The webinar was divided into two sessions for eight speakers and one of each session contained discussion with speakers and sharing ideas and thoughts upon the relevant themes.

In the beginning, Dr. Zaw Lwin Tun, a representative of Myanmar Water Partnership and as a Deputy Director General Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (IWUMD), delivered a welcoming speech to all the attendees. The followed exchanging of expertise and knowledge session by the speakers covered these topics mentioned below.

  1. Flood and Disaster Prevention in the Coast of Myanmar.
  2. Flood Fighting in Upper Ayeyarwady Delta.
  3. The Importance of Early Warning System in Flood Management.
  4. Information about Risk Care Mobile Application.
  5. Flood Mitigation in Yangon Using Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems(SUDS).
  6. Introduction to Water Sensitive Design and Role of some Water Sensitive Tools for Flood Control in Urban Areas (from environmental perspective).
  7. Community-based Approaches to Flood Management in Myanmar.
  8. Lessons from Bangladesh and Nepal: Role of WUA/WUG in Flood Management & Drainage.

At the end of the session, the questions came out from the participants were discussed by the respective speakers and then, the idea exchanging moment was brought to a successful conclusion. Thereafter, the closing remark was delivered by the Daw Hla Oo New who is a representative of Myanmar Water Partnership, and also an irrigation engineer, Eastern States Agri-business Project ESAP, IFAD.

After all of this, the online seminar of sharing knowledge of Flood Management from Various Perspectives has accomplished.

Dr Toe Aung, Deputy Director of Watershed Management Division, Mangroves and Coastal Resources Conservation Session, Forest Department shared the current operations and performance of Myanmar with the intention of preventing flood and disaster in the in the coast of Myanmar.

2. Flood Fighting in Upper Ayeyarwady Delta - U Tin Myint Aung - Myanmar Water Portal

Flood Fighting in Upper Ayeyarwady Delta which is the prominent subject of flooding management community in Myanmar was presented by U Tin Myint Aung who is an assistant engineer from the branch of operation and maintenance IWUMD.

3. Importance of Early Warning System in Flood Management - Dr Shelly Win - Myanmar Water Portal

The Early Warning System was discussed by Dr Shelly Win, a national DRM-EWS specialist of Fish Adapt project, FAO. Dr Shelly Win pointed out what early warning system is and a brief explanation of the components of the system. 

4. Information on RiskCare Mobile Application - U Kyaw Zeyar Tint - Myanmar Water Portal

U Kyaw Zeyar Tint, an assistant Engineer of the design branch, IWUMD shared information on RiskCare mobile application which is being still designed for the purposes of sharing flood information and warning alert for the incoming natural disaster went well according to the contents.

5. Flood Mitigation in Yangon using Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) - Dr. Yee Mon Thu - Myanmar Water Portal

The title, Flood Mitigation in Yangon Using Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) was introduced and presented by Dr.Yee Mon Thu, Director and water resources specialist at Water Bridge Myanmar Co., Ltd. She focused on the four elements which a

U Aung Naing Soe who is working as an assistant engineer in design branch, IWUMD also delivered noteworthy information about Water Sensitive Design and Role of some Water Sensitive Tools for Flood Control in Urban Areas from the environmental perspective. 

7. Community-based Approaches to Flood Management in Myanmar - U Nay Myo Lin - Myanmar Water Portal

U Nay Myo Lin, working as an assistant director of the design branch, IWUMD subsequently took up the discussion with the topic, Community-based Approaches to Flood Management in Myanmar. In accordance with the chosen theme, he presented community-based disaster management in details including communities participation in the phases of prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery and the implementations of the processes.

8. Lessons from Bangladesh and Nepal: Role of WUG/A in Flood Management and Drainage - U Tha Peng Cung - Myanmar Water Portal

Lessons from Bangladesh and Nepal: Role of WUA/WUG in Flood Management & Drainage was the last perspective discussed as the finalization of the speakers' discussion time. U Tha Peng Cung, an assistant Engineer from the planning and works branch IWMUD pointed out his perspective visions and findings concerning with the participatory flood and disaster management of water users associations and groups by comparing the two case studies, Bangladesh and Nepal.
