Indawgyi Lake conserves rare fish species ‘Microphis Dunckeris’
05 Nov 2020 - Source: Global New Light of Myanmar - Indawgyi Lake conserves the world's rare fish species called Microphis Dunckeris, which inhabit only in Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State in Myanmar, according to Fauna & Flora International (FFI-Myanmar). The FFI Myanmar is arranging to conserve the fish species called Microphis Dunckeris by designating the Lake as a conservative zone to prevent this species from extinction.
"This Microphis Dunckeris fish species is rare, and we could not find them anywhere in the world; we could find them only in Indawgyi Lake in Myanmar. It is a huge lake. This fish species is living in an isolated area. If the isolated area is damaged, those fish species will disappear. This rare fish species are living at the bottom of the Indawgyi Lake."The local fishermen are also catching the fish and shrimp by using the fishing tools. They might catch these rare fish species as well. Therefore, our FFI Myanmar has prohibited fishers from using fishing tools. The local fishermen are also cooperating with us. We first found Microphis Dunckeris species in 2013," said U Zaw Loon, manager of the Freshwater and Saltwater Conservative Programme, FFI Myanmar. This fish species is similar to the water dragon species inhabiting the sea. The Microphis Dunckeris fish species inhabiting the Indawgyi Lake are living only in the freshwater area which is over 900 miles away from the sea, he added.
"To be able to prevent the scarcity of Microphis Dunckeris fish species, the Fisheries Department has been coordinating with FFI Myanmar and the local fishermen since 2015 and conducting the conservative activities diligently," said U Myo Nyunt Maung, the assistant officer of the Fisheries Department (Indawgyi region branch office). Indawgyi Lake has five no-fishing zones for the whole year.
