Yangon water ferries to resume as usual starting from 1 June
31 MAY 2020 - Source: Global New Light of Myanmar - Yangon Pansodan-Dala water ferries will resume as usual starting from 1 June for the passengers to be able to travel conveniently, according to the Delta Division of the Inland Water Transport (IWT).
The Pansodan-Dala jetty is the only gateway for the local people in southern Yangon — Dala, Twantay, Kawhmu, Kungyangon townships and some townships in Ayeyawady Region to link with the commercial city hub of Yangon. However, the operation routes of the water ferries have been reduced from April to May because of declined number of passengers in the coronavirus outbreak period.
"The number of water ferry passengers has increased these days compared to last month. This Pansodan-Dala jetty is one of the crowded places with the people because it is the entrance gate of the Yangon Region. After the coronavirus-positive patients have been found in Myanmar, the operation of water ferry has been reduced. The travelling of the passengers with water ferry is not normal in the water festival period. Starting from the second week of May, the people started to go outside their home. On 27 and 28, May, around 15,000 passengers travelled. So, the water ferry service is running 46 routes, as usual, starting from 1 June. With the increased routes, the passengers do not need to wait for the ferries and their travelling time will not be delayed, said Pansodan Jetty Manager Daw Khin Khin Nu.
Three 'Cherry' water ferries, operating between Pansodan and Dala daily, are reopening to provide transportation service as in normal period starting from 1 June. Moreover, the Z-crafts are operating up and down from 6 am to 7 pm, transporting the vehicles and cargos.
