"Let's lend Yangon River our hands for an hour"

According to the Thant Myanmar report, 119 tons of plastic run down the Ayeyarwady basin every day in which 29 tons of plastic are constantly floating in the Yangon river. Another 90 tonnes of plastic waste a day are dumped in the Ayeyarwady River. Types of plastics contributing in these dumps are coffeemix bags, bottle caps, betel nut bags and Styrofoam boxes.

The National Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan was drafted by the government to address the problem. It aims to make transformation from conventional waste management towards achieving a goal of a zero waste, resource-efficient and sustainable society by 2030.

Based on a comment from Department of Environmental Conservation Director General, U Hla Maung Thein, as plastic materials are now being used everywhere, reducing their daily use has become a real main challenge.
