20 Dec 19 - Source: Myanmar Times - Some 22 Japanese companies are to meet with Myanmar companies to explore possible partnerships in the operation and maintenance of the economic capital's water system.

The companies will come to Yangon on a public-private partnership mission this month as part of the Japan Machinery Centre for Trade and Investment and Japan External Trade Organisation.

The mission – comprising 22 Japanese enterprises with experience in water system technology, and Japanese regional governments – will introduce Japanese technology, specifically in the maintenance of aging water pipes, water treatment and purification, and wastewater treatment.

"Many people don't have sufficient water in Yangon, especially clean, safe and reliable water," U Phyo Min Thein, chief minister of Yangon, said.

he added there are many difficulties in water supply, especially in the distribution and treatment of potable water.

"We need help to upgrade this system, and the Japan-Myanmar partnership will help us get sufficient water supply," he added.

Yangon is located at the confluence of the Yangon River, Pazundaung Creek and Bago River. It gets average annual rainfall of 2700 millimetres, which easily refills four main reservoirs, located about 40 miles north of the city.

yet, despite the abundance of water in the area, the water supply system around the metropolis of 5.2 million people, only reaches 38 percent of the population due to poor infrastructure.
