Plastics, netting removed from coral reefs in Kawthoung
27 May 19 - Source: Global New Light Of Myanmar - As part of efforts to conserve coral reefs, plastic, fishing nets and garbage on reefs near NyaungOoPhee Island in Kawthoung District in the Myeik Archipelago were removed by volunteers yesterday, who were working for the third day.
A 10-member team of divers and support staff removed some 30 kg of waste from the coral reefs.
TZK Hotels and Tourism Company and NyaungOoPhee Hotel and Resort have sponsored clean ups of the reefs two to three times each tourism season for the past three years.
Ghost nets or ghost gear, also known as ALDFG (abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear), are becoming a serious problem for the health of coral reefs. —Kyaw Soe (Kawthoung)
