The UN Watercourses Convention Summary
"The UN Watercourses Convention: A Window of Opportunities for Cooperation" was held at Aureum Palace Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw on 11th April 2018, facilitated by IUCN under the BRIDGE programme in partnership with National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) of Myanmar.
The objective of the dialogue is to bring together relevant stakeholders from Myanmar working on/or having influence on water governance, to:
- review the principles and provisions of UNWC (1997) and assesses its implications for the management of the transboundary rivers in Myanmar
- discuss and identify the advantages of UNWC (1997) ratification by Myanmar.
- better define how the BRIDGE programme can support Myanmar and gather inputs for the designing of BRIDGE Mekong Phase IV (2019 – 2021).
Opening speech was given by U Win Hlaing, project director of Ayeyarwady Integrated River Basin Management Project (AIRBM) and IUCN representative Dr. Alejandro Iza (Head of Environmental Law Programme).
Dr. Alejandro Iza presented about the programme (BRIDGE) Building River Dialogues and Governance and questions-and-answers was followed.
Dr. Tran Duc Cuong, Deputy Secretary General of Vietnam National Mekong Committee shared Vietnam's experiences on ratification to UNWC.
Participants, NWRC Advisory Group, government departments, civil society organizations, and universities, discussed the UN Watercourses Convention and the dialogue was facilitated by Dr. Alejandro.
