Interviews& Reflections

MEET WITH STUDENT

Ye Mann Aung, Student, Trade Training Institute

What kind of water sector does Myanmar need to improve?

" Water resources are crucial in Myanmar. There is a bond between water resources and natural environment. We need to conserve the environment to sustain the good quality of water resources. The world is facing water scarcity now. But we know little about value of water in Myanmar. Millions of water is spent every year in Thingyan Water Festival. In contrary, country like Singapore has to buy water from another country. What I would like to suggest is let's not waste water and use it efficiently "

MEET WITH JUNIOR SPECIALIST

Zin Thaw Oo, Junior GIS Specialist, Arcadis

What is the reflection of today's event?

I am working as a Junior GIS specialist in Integrated Ayeyarwady Delta Strategy (IADS). From today conference Myanmar Water, I learned about the ongoing water projects in Yangon and throughout the country, future planning, and difficulties in implementation process. I acquired knowledge of technologies on water treatment and water distribution. I hope that this kind of event will be held frequently in the future and raise public awareness to spend water in an efficient way.

MEET WITH PROFESSIONAL

Dr. Hnin Wityi, Ph.D, Civil and Environmental Engineer, CTI Engineering Co.,Ltd

What is the reflection of today's event?

Today exhibition is all about equipment, manufacturer, and waste water treatment related to water engineering and visitors from different sectors come to this place. Both students and business men are coming to this event as companies come for business opportunities and students for knowledge.

Why is water important in Myanmar?

MEET WITH EXPERT

Engr. Khin Maung Htaey, P.E.

Vice President (Myanmar Engineering Society)

Central Committee Member (Myanmar Engineering Council)

Why is water important in Myanmar?

Water is affected to living standard and is relevantly crucial for hygiene and cleanliness. Nowadays, life expectancy in Myanmar is around 62 years and it is low expectancy compared to other south east Asian countries. It is because of lack of hygiene and cleanliness. Most of Myanmar people are lack of knowledge about how to use water and how to cleanse water although there are plenty of water resources. In addition, they are lack of awareness about how to purify water from river and stream and how to use clean water ingeniously. 90 percent of city dwellers are not familiar with sanitation and water treatment system. Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitaw have proper sanitation in these days, yet there are small amount of habitat which has treatment plant in Bago, Minbu, Monywa and Tachileik. Besides, factories and plants are undeniably essential to having waste water treatment system. Speaking of which, due to lack of awareness of water treatment, existing fresh and clean water becomes polluted more and more. Freshwater is under one percent in the ecosystem regarding as surface water, ground water, rain water and so on. In the biosphere, the more human population, the more freshwater is vital. Therefore, if freshwater is polluted, the relationship between the earth's ecosystem and the composition of the atmosphere will be shattered. Learning from the past, natural streams and brooks that are extremely valuable for rural region become less owing to climate change and growth population in those areas. Freshwater has to be maintained and preserved from pollution.

What kind of water sector does Myanmar need to improve?

All water sectors are needed to improve nowadays in Myanmar like rivers, lakes, sanitation system and so on. There are some works and projects in Myanmar but deficiency of cooperation. Other countries have now authority for preserving freshwater and water treatment. Considering this, every sector and every part of water sector are linked each other. Today National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) leaded by Henry Van Thio, Vice President and Htun Lwin Oo, Director General of DWIR act and organize water sector. Water law and regulation are needed to be improved efficiently. Hence, water sector is obligatory and is environmental sector as well.
