The Forum is the first time ever that is held by the Regional Government and constitutes a rare opportunity for investors to learn directly from the regional authorities and the Myanmar Investment Commission how mutually beneficial for them and the Yangon Regional Government to do business together. To achieve this ultimate outcome, the Forum will have high-ranking government officials as speakers, such as the mInister for Planning and Finance and the Chief Minister of the Yangon Region Government. They will certainly lay out the future development plans for Yangon Region and all the required information that will immensely help the potential investors in deciding where to invest and lingering concerns of potential investors to do business in Myanmar, in particular in Yangon Region.

In fact, this will be an event that you will never regret having attended.

The United Nations (UN) Convention on the law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses (UNWC), 1997 presents an opportunity for countries sharing river basin by providing a clear legal framework. By setting rules and standards, the UNWC, 1997 can strengthen water governance, enforce globally accepted legal and institutional principles and can facilitate cooperation among different stakeholders by providing clear mechanism to build consensus and reach agreements on the governance of transboundary rivers.

The dialogue on “UNWC (1997) as a tool for cooperative transboundary water governance and sustainable basin management” will be facilitated by IUCN under the BRIDGE programme in partnership with National Water Resource Committee (NWRC) of Myanmar. The objective of the dialogue is to bring together relevant stakeholders from Myanmar working on/or having influence on water governance, to:

- review the principles and provisions of UNWC (1997) and assesses its implications for the management of the transboundary rivers in Myanmar
- discuss and identify the advantages of UNWC (1997) ratification by Myanmar.
- better define how the BRIDGE programme can support Myanmar and gather inputs for the designing of BRIDGE Mekong Phase IV (2019 – 2021).

Building An Inclusive, Integrated and Connected Myanmar

With ASEAN turning 50 and China’s One-Belt-One-Road initiative setting the centre stage, Myanmar is in urgent needs to close its infrastructure gap, integrate with the world and collaborate with its neighbouring countries in order to gain from these initiatives for its economy growth. According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Myanmar’s infrastructure gap between now and 2030 worth $120 billion. Myanmar, with its urban population growth that faster than spatial growth expects additional of 10 million of people in the cities requires an additional of $320 billion investment on infrastructure to tackle its endemic poverty.

Being the second-largest country by area in South-east Asia with relatively extensive road network that just 20% paved, Myanmar possess vast investment opportunities in trunk road network modernisation, construction of expanded roadways including elevated highways, improving access to the city via bridges to the south, east and west. Development of regional airports has also been part of the government’s plans in developing both the tourism and transport sector, in addition to its existing plane and cargo handling services that require significant needs of technological support and investment. Urban transport infrastructure in major cities whether in local / commuter rail, road, bridges and alternative transport options i.e. water-taxi, bus system are in focus and presents high investment opportunities.

The Myanmar’s telecoms infrastructure is another area that in need of development. IFC calculated that another 10,000 additional towers are required to provide Myanmar with full coverage. Emphasise is placed on supporting the expansion and further development of the mobile network to fibre network that opportunities exist to develop both national-level corridors as well as to improve Myanmar’s global connectivity.

The Government of Myanmar is determined to pursue balanced territorial development with the aim to close its infrastructure gap and upgrade its infrastructure capacities to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth. Themed “Building an Inclusive, Integrated and Connected Myanmar”, the hosting of the 4th Myanmar Infrastructure Summit 2018 (MIS2018) with the strong supports from Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Myanmar Engineering Society (MES), Myanmar Investors Development Association (MIDA), Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association and various regional governments along with key stakeholders, will once again provides an unparalleled platform for potential foreign investors, infrastructure developers, technology providers and infrastructure funders to be updated on the development plans and policies of investing in Myanmar’s urban and rural infrastructure; to assess market opportunities and at the same time build potential business and investment networks with the local policy makers and industry players.

The World Water Forum is the world’s biggest water-related event and is organized by the World Water Council (WWC), an international organization that brings together all those interested in the theme of water. Its mission is “to promote awareness, build political commitment and trigger action on critical water issues at all levels, to facilitate the efficient conservation, protection, development, planning, management and use of water in all its dimensions on an environmentally sustainable basis for the benefit of all life on Earth”

In the process, the Council also catalyzes initiatives and activities, whose results converge towards its flagship product, the World Water Forum. The World Water Forum contributes to the dialogue of the decision-making process on water at the global level, seeking to achieve the rational and sustainable use of this resource. Given its political, technical and institutional scope, one of the Forum’s main features is the open, democratic participation of actors drawn from different sectors, making it an event of the greatest importance on the international agenda.

The World Water Council organizes the Forum every three years together with the respective host country and city. To date, there have been seven editions of the World Water Forum, in different countries, on four different continents. In 2014, Brazil’s candidature to host the event was successful and Brasilia was selected as the host-city for the event. Accordingly, in 2018, Brazil will be hosting the 8th edition of the World Water Forum. It will be the first time the event is held in the Southern Hemisphere.
