Myanmar Valuing Water

A joint initiative by the British Chamber of Commerce Myanmar and The Water Agency, the Myanmar Valuing Water Program aims to bring together public and private sector leadership to have a dialogue on the value of water in Myanmar. The program recognizes that water – too much, too little, too polluted - is increasingly becoming a strategic factor for companies in Myanmar in running and growing their businesses.

Value of Water for Business

Myanmar's transformation presents both opportunities and challenges for water management. Although Myanmar has abundant water resources at the national scale, increasing local variability of supply lies behind much of the prevailing poverty and food insecurity. Droughts, floods and pollution increasingly affect livelihoods and economic progress.

Local and international water experts are addressing these issues in Myanmar every day. However, at the core of this challenge, is the critical issue of how Myanmar and its people choose to value water and how that drives policies, business practices and behavior.

As all businesses depend on and impact water in some way and pressures on water in Myanmar increase and business continuity is challenged, it is critical for companies to understand what their business case for water is.

During this talk The Water Agency will introduce "water" in the Myanmar context – its challenges and opportunities – and invite you to discuss what this means for companies in Myanmar: how it affects you and how you respond to it. Based on this, we will explore how we can develop an agenda of activities in 2020 that will help you to develop your own business case for water in Myanmar and how we can give the private sector a stronger voice in the national water agenda.

This month’s topic for our 9th Climate Talks organized by Conyat Create will be around Disaster Risk Resilience and Climate Change.
Myanmar is exposed to a wide range of natural hazards, triggering different types of small scale to large-scale disasters across the country’s territory. A total of 27 natural disasters have been recorded in twenty years, causing the death of approximately 140,000 people, and affecting the lives and livelihoods of 3.9 million people; an average of 125,000 people a year. Increasing disasters are attributed to a number of factors, mainly of human origin, such as environmental degradation; rapid population increase with subsequent exponential expansion of urban centres and other related factors; all these leading to increased population
vulnerabilities.
During this Climate Talk, we will attempt to improve your understanding of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation concepts.

Speakers:
Liliana Demartini: ActionAid Myanmar – Junior EUAV for Project Management in Disaster Risk Reduction
Liliana has cultivated her expertise by harvesting valuable experience from her involvement with organizations invested in the promotion of environmental protection and resilience, gender equality, human rights and capacity building in challenging contexts in South East Asia, West and Eastern Africa.

Jen Stephens: UNICEF – Climate Change, Environment, and Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist

We are looking forward to seeing you all!

- Tech for Cities -

As the size of the population living in the city area is increasing more and more every day, data and technologies play an important part to improve the lives of the citizens and businesses that inhabit it. This track is to create technology to improve the quality and performance of urban services of a city as well as reducing wastage, overall costs, and resource consumption. It could be about providing sufficient fresh water, universal access to cleaner energy, the ability to travel efficiently from one point to another or safety and security for the residents and smart traffic management systems.

About GALI

The Global Accelerator Learning Initiative (GALI) is a collaboration between the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) and Emory University designed to explore key questions about enterprise acceleration such as: Do acceleration programs contribute to revenue growth? Do they help companies attract investment? GALI builds on the Entrepreneurship Database Program at Emory University, which works with accelerator programs around the world to collect data describing the entrepreneurs that they attract and support. To date, GALI has collected data from more than 19,000 early-stage ventures and partnered with more than 280 acceleration programs throughout the world. Click here to learn more >>

We would like to raise awareness and action for our global water and sanitation challenges. Currently more than 2.4B people don't have access to clean and safe sanitation, and more than 660M people don't have access to clean and safe drinking water. Especially woman and children feel the burden of collecting clean water as they need to walk kilometers (hours) - and therefore are not able to participate on schools.

The concept is fairly easy - Walking for Water is a walking tour of around 6 kilometers (average distance people walk to collect water) in which they carry 6 liters of water with them. We will walk for water coming Sunday around Kandawgyi lake (6km) and we invite you to join us. Please bring your own water to drink, and perhaps something to eat as well. By carrying it with you this will give you the experience of carrying 6 liters of water for 6 kms.

We will start to walk coming Sunday (17th of March) at 7.00am at (map CoP meeting point) and hope to be back around 9.00am. Our team will bring some reports to share more information about Kandawgyi lake. This will be an informal walk, it will be an achievement to finish a walk around the Kandawgyi Lake. The objective is to raise awareness, meet new people and to have fun and enjoy your own drinks - food afterwards.

Lets explore together if we can do this next years as a fundraising walk, and include many schools as well. Walking for Water is an awareness and fundraising initiative in the Netherlands. School children aged 10-15 are sponsored by friends and family to walk six kilometres while carrying six litres of water in a backpack.
