Introduction:
Zoltán Illés, Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy

Myanmar is a Southeast Asian Country surrounded by Thailand, Laos, China, India, and Bangladesh. The almost 100 years old University of Yangon is the oldest Arts and Science University of Myanmar with 22 departments, located in Yangon, the previous capital. In 2010, Myanmar re-entered the global scene after 22 years of isolation. Since then the country performed steady economic growth by opening new opportunities to national and foreign investors and international donors.
While Myanmar boasts the richness of water resources, spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall is highly uneven, resulting in water scarcity and diversification in a central dry zone. On the other hand flash floods in the Northern and Western areas and floods and salinization problems in the Ayarwaddy delta regions of Myanmar are taking place. Water management in Myanmar is scattered across ministries and departments resulting in overlap responsibilities in some sectors and neglected in others. My collaborative research with scientists from the Central-European University hopefully will fill the gaps related to water management issues and policies in Myanmar. A planned comparative study on Integrated Water Management and Water Policy between Myanmar and Hungary could be the basis for new policy enforcement and changes in Myanmar.

The Chindwin River Basin is very importance for biological diversity, hosting 11 key “biodiversity hotspots” and home for 38 globally threatened species (IUCN). Several faculty members and students of Monywa University were originally living along the Chindwin river. The aim of this campaign is to raise the awareness of Monywa University students and local people to understand better on how to conserve the Chindwin river basin and sustainable environment with the focus on valuing of ecosystem services and maintaining biodiversity in the river basin. Especially, local people will be able to understand and familiar to the meaning of biodiversity, ecosystem and ecosystem services and how to provide them.

More Information will be coming soon.

Kandawgyi, at the heart of Yangon, serves not only recreation purposes. The lake, artificial, plays an important role in the water management of the downtown Yangon area, for example in the provision of drinking water. The natural scene of the lake water and large shady trees also are crucial in protecting the urban area from flooding.

This is an invitation for a special short course as a follow-up of the Google Earth Engine course which we organised last year. The course will take place from 5-7 December (3 days) at YTU. Please also let us know if you want to join the training. For questions you may contact the Course Director Mr. Gijs Simons: [email protected]

In this three day workshop for water professionals we will focus on using the remote sensing package Google Earth Engine for water related issues. The three main subjects of the training will be rainfall, river morphology and soil moisture. The subjects rainfall and river morphology will be discussed in parallel separate sessions. During this training you will learn how to work with satellite data using Google Earth Engine and will learn more about rainfall or river morphology and soil moisture. With this knowledge it will be easier to understand the processes behind rainfall, river morphology and soil moisture and adapt to the future.

The lecturers are:
- Mr. Teije van der Horst
- Ms. Nina Kattler
- Mr. Gijs Simons
- Ms. Carolien Wegman

The program for the training will look like this:
- Wednesday 5 till Friday 7th of December
- Total number of participants: About 30. (15 for the rain-fall case and 15 for the morphology case).
- Each participant can choose for one case study (Morphology or Rainfall).

[About the 2018 Forum]

The Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food and Energy is the largest annual knowledge-sharing event in the Greater Mekong. It presents research-based evidence to non-governmental organisations, policy-makers, the private sector, and development agencies. It does this through carefully designed and facilitated dialogues.

The 2018 Forum theme is:
Economic Development and the Rivers of the Greater Mekong: The rivers of the Greater Mekong hold great economic value in terms of their hydropower, fisheries, transport and agricultural potential. So too, these rivers are economic and ecological corridors generating immense economic growth for the countries through which they pass. But this economic growth comes with its own social, economic and environmental challenges. The 2018 Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food and Energy will focus on ways in which these challenges can be addressed through tried-and-tested solutions, knew knowledge generated by research and through a regional, multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder dialogue.

[Forum purpose]

The purpose of the forum is to:

To create ‘safe’ spaces for stakeholders to come together to informally discuss difficult and controversial water-related discussions.
To network and to promote cross-regional learning on water-food-energy nexus-related issues.
To encourage and facilitate building of networks across sectors and river basins to support future collaborations.
Interface research-based solutions with a non-technical public, policy-makers, and the private sector.
Provide would-be users with an opportunity to deliberate and query potential solutions.
Who attends the Forum?
The forum is designed for knowledge users: government and development agencies, the private sector and research-for-development practitioners. We emphasise deliberation and listening, query and debate.

At the 2017 Forum, we welcomed 431 participants, representing 171 institutions. 7% of our participants were Cambodian, 6% Chinese, 7% Laotian, 34% Myanmar, 7% Thai, 10% Vietnamese and 27% international. The forum attracts participants from the research community, civil society, government and the private sector.

The Dredging and Reclamation course was held from 15 January to 19 January 2018 at the Inya Lake Hotel, Yangon and organized by the combination of Dutch dredging contractors Boskalis, Van Oord and Dutch Embassy in Myanmar.

The course is developed for professionals in dredging-related industries, aiming to encourage people to enter the field of dredging, and to improve knowledge about dredging throughout the world. Lecturers of the course were Marcel van den Heuvel, Robert Dijkema from Van Oord and Pieter den Ridder from Boskalis.

Although there is a typical amount of dredging-related industries in Myanmar, they have never learnt about international dredging projects (showcases). Additionally, different techniques for land reclamation were discussed.

All 33 Burmese participants enjoyed doing workshops and enjoyed competing with their teams to win the tender contract during the final simulation workshop. During the tender discussions, the participant teams were thrilled and excited to share their visions from their respective field of studies.
