Heavy floods triggered by overflowing water at Sedawgyi Dam has devastated some 50 villages and also destroyed croplands.

According to local villages, the incident that occurred on October 14 in Madaya township in Mandalay Region, was the worst flood to hit the area since 2010.

More than 1,700 acres of land, cultivated by over 580 farmers were destroyed and nearly 1,300 people were affected by the overflowing of the dam.

Due to heavy rains, water in the dam, which can contain up to about 420 feet, rose to roughly 421ft and the control gate had to be opened to release water into the Tangarthe stream, causing floods and collapsing river banks.
